The Second Advent of General Downloader — easy downloads from everywhere! 2011-07-16 11:42:59

Our media database hit the bar at 223 million of files and 15 million of videos and keeps growing. At that we pay close attention to the quality and validity of the database. Our goal is to make the service useful for you, that's why we are doing our best to check the database as often as we can and clean the dead files from it. Your reports help us a lot in this.

Starting from the previous version of the General Downloader we automatically monitor the successful downloads and deleted files in the background which also greatly helps us to keep the high quality of our file database.

In this blog post we'd like to look closely at the General Downloader software and discuss its current stage of evolution. It's been already half a year since we launched this project and we made a lot during this time. At this point the GD is a full-featured download manager which supports automatic download from 11 major file hosting services: Rapidshare.com, MegaUpload.com, Hotfile.com, 4shared.com, Uploading.com, FileServe.com, FileSonic.com, Depositfiles.com, Furk.net, Letitbit.net, Turbobit.net.

One thing we have to mention here is that from now you are not tied to our search websites and you can use any source of the download links. The General Files, as far as it is integrated with the GD, just lets you easily add downloads to the program. That being said, we do, of course, recommend you to use the General Files for all your file search needs as we have a very large and unique file database.

We also strongly recommend you to register an account at General World and log your General Downloader into it. The registration is free and very easy, however, it will let you fully use all features of the GD.

One of the recently implemented features, currently available for registered users only, is the automatic interception of the download links (to the supported file hosting services only) from the system clipboard or browsers (IE, Firefox, Chrome). This saves your time and simplifies the work with the GD, as it automatically detects and catches the supported download links and then asks you for your decision.

There are more options for the registered users in the General Downloader. You may set the number of download retries, the number of simultaneous downloads and some interface settings, like ones for the G-points panel and the additional dialog window for addition of a new download.

Registered users in the General Downloader can...

All users can use the premium accounts at the file hosting websites together with the General Downloader. You can enter your premium login and password in the "File Hosting Services" tab. Of course it's just a comfy feature for those of our users who, for some reason, purchase premium accounts. We are not connected to the file hosting services and we do not push you to buy premium accounts.

In the very nearest future we will complement the General Downloader with the built in browser, so you can search for the files directly from the GD. The results will be displayed in the GD as well, so you can download them without even opening our website in your main browser! Even more smart and handy features are already planned for the further updates.

As for the other news, we made some improvements to the General Files interface. Now the queries and the found files are visible to the unregistered users as well. But if a user creates the account, this log of activity will be transferred to his/her account and not erased. That means you do not have to remember what detailed information pages you have visited, but decided to download that files later - all of them will be displayed in the history. This is further supplemented by the download queue system, which was reworked to meet the current needs and is now called "Favorite files". You can use it to store the download links which you want to access in the future, or simply show to your friends or any users of the General Files (according to your privacy settings).

In addition to that we made a new information block "It Is May Be Interesting". In this block we show you fresh and unique files which we selected specially for you by a smart algorithm. Think of it as of a kind of proactive search. Download the files that no one yet downloaded before you whether because they are so rare and unique, or because they are freshly uploaded to the file hosting service.

And of course we anticipate the launch of the two new projects, General Catalog and General Torrents. At this moment they are in the closed beta testing stage, but soon we will open them for everyone - watch our blog for the news! We are happy to be useful for you.
